A beginner’s guide to Romanian pronunciation
A practical Romanian pronunciation guide to ă, â/î, ș, ț, stress and consonant spelling, with a ten-minute listening routine.
Romanian spelling is systematic enough to support beginners, but the special vowels, word stress and several letter combinations require native audio. Aim for intelligibility and stable contrasts, not the removal of your accent.
The five letters learners must type and hear

Word stress is lexical
Romanian stress can fall on different syllables and is not normally marked in everyday spelling. Learn each new word from audio with its stressed syllable. Inflection can interact with rhythm, so practise complete forms rather than a bare dictionary entry alone.
Avoid importing another Romance sound system
Italian, Spanish and French provide useful comparisons but not a complete model. Romanian has its own central vowels, diphthongs and consonant sequences. Keep ă and â/î distinct and use contrastive recordings instead of English respellings.
