Romanian questions and negation: natural beginner patterns
Ask Romanian yes–no and information questions, place nu correctly and use cine, ce, unde, când, cum and de ce in real exchanges.
Romanian can form many yes–no questions through intonation without changing ordinary word order. Information questions place the relevant question word according to meaning and focus.
Build the question-word set
Use cine (who), ce (what), unde (where), când (when), cum (how), cât (how much/many) and de ce (why). Learn likely answer shapes beside each question.
Put nu before the verbal group
Basic negation places nu before the verb: Nu știu, Nu pot să vin. Negative words interact through Romanian’s negative-concord system, so English rules about avoiding “double negatives” should not be imported.
Intonation and information structure
A written question mark does not teach spoken contour. Record yes–no questions and neutral statements from native audio, then practise clarification sequences: question, short answer and follow-up.
Questions learners ask
Frequently asked questions
Does Romanian invert subject and verb in questions?
Not as a general requirement comparable to English auxiliary inversion. Intonation and context often carry yes–no questioning.
Can two negative words occur together?
Yes. Romanian uses negative concord in standard constructions.
What does cât agree with?
Forms can vary for gender, number and case depending on the noun phrase and function.
