Romanian for Romance-language speakers: transfer and traps
Use Italian, Spanish, French or Portuguese knowledge to accelerate Romanian while avoiding false friends and structural assumptions.
Another Romance language can speed Romanian vocabulary recognition and grammar awareness, but it does not remove the need to learn Romanian sound, articles, cases and clause patterns independently.
Transfer what actually matches
Cognates, grammatical terminology and familiar tense meanings can reduce initial load. Form a hypothesis from the related language, then verify Romanian pronunciation, gender, plural and construction before using the word.
Watch the high-impact differences
Romanian normally places the definite article after the noun, preserves productive case marking and uses să-clauses widely. Central vowels and several common words will not follow Spanish or Italian expectations.
Build a contrast notebook
Record only differences that caused an error: false friend, article form, preposition, stress or verb frame. Write a Romanian example and one controlled contrast. This turns prior knowledge into a tool without making it the curriculum.
Questions learners ask
Frequently asked questions
Is Romanian closest to Italian?
Romanian shares substantial Romance inheritance with Italian and other languages, but a single “closest” label does not predict every grammar, sound or vocabulary feature.
Can Spanish speakers skip A1?
They may recognise much, but should still assess listening, pronunciation and productive grammar before choosing a level.
Are cognates pronounced similarly?
Sometimes, but Romanian sound development and stress often differ enough that audio remains necessary.
