Romanian certification: official routes, CEFR levels and preparation
Identify the certificate your institution accepts, understand the Romanian Language Institute route and prepare every assessed skill responsibly.
There is no single private-app badge that proves Romanian for every purpose. Begin with the authority that requires evidence, obtain its exact accepted issuer and level, and then use the current Institutul Limbii Române or other authorised institutional information for registration, assessment and certification.

Start with the receiving authority, not the exam name
University admission, citizenship, employment and professional recognition can use different rules and evidence. Ask the receiving institution for the exact certificate title, minimum CEFR level, accepted issuer, validity period, required skill profile and deadline. Save the written answer. A document described informally as “a Romanian certificate” may be a course-completion record rather than assessed proficiency, or it may be valid for one purpose but not another. Do this verification before paying for tuition, travel or an examination.
What the Romanian Language Institute route establishes
The Institutul Limbii Române states that it organises attestation sessions for people who want their Romanian speaking, knowledge and comprehension assessed. Its information places the levels within the Common European Framework of Reference and describes sessions at the Institute and through institutional partnerships abroad. The current attestation page is the source for operative announcements; older news posts can explain precedent but should not be treated as the next registration window.
How sessions and documentation can change
Official session announcements specify the levels offered, dates, capacity, application period, documents, payment instructions, delivery mode and communication of results. Some recent sessions have been online, but that does not guarantee every future session will use identical technology or procedures. Never send identity documents or payment to an intermediary merely because a copied announcement looks official. Start from the ILR domain, follow the current session notice and verify contact details there.
Prepare the skill profile rather than a CEFR label
Build listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production and writing separately. Take a representative task and classify each problem: comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, organisation, pronunciation, interaction or timing. At A levels, daily routines and concrete exchanges dominate; higher levels demand increasingly independent, precise and sustained communication. Use the level descriptor as a performance target, then obtain task-specific information from the authorised provider rather than guessing the format from another language’s exam.
A defensible evidence folder
Keep the receiving institution’s written requirement, the current official session notice, your application confirmation, proof of payment, identification instructions and the final certificate details in one folder. Check that your name and personal data match your identity document before the session. If remote assessment is announced, test the required camera, microphone, connection and platform early. This page cannot assess authenticity or determine whether an exemption applies; consequential decisions require the relevant institution’s confirmation.
How to study while waiting for a session
Do not suspend language development until dates appear. Use one structured Romanian course, level-appropriate audio, regular writing and a weekly speaking task. Every two weeks, repeat the same functional performance—introducing yourself, describing a process, summarising a text or defending a view—and compare clarity, accuracy and support needed. When the official task description becomes available, map your existing skill practice onto the format instead of replacing learning with test repetition.
